Many people assume a business trip "doesn't count" because they went for their Swedish employer and came straight back. For Swedish citizenship, it does count. If you travel a lot for work, this is the part of your application to check first.
The short answer
Yes, work trips count. Time abroad for work is treated like any other time abroad when Migrationsverket calculates your residence time.
The rule: if you have been abroad for more than six weeks (42 days) in a year, the whole time you were outside Sweden is deducted from your residence time. Shorter trips don't matter. The trips in a year add up, whether they were holidays, family visits or meetings. Our guide to the six-week rule covers the rule in detail.
What MIG 2008:14 says
MIG 2008:14 is a ruling from the Migration Court of Appeal (Migrationsöverdomstolen). It concerns the residence requirement in the Citizenship Act (2001:82), 11 § 4, under the rules in force in 2008.
The applicant worked on oil rigs abroad. He spent regular periods of several weeks away, then about as long in Sweden, so close to half of each year was spent abroad for work. The court noted that ordinary holidays and short visits abroad don't break residence, but held that regularly recurring work periods abroad are to be treated like longer stays abroad. That time could not be counted as residence time.
The point that matters for travellers: the court looked at the pattern of absences together, not at each trip on its own. Migrationsverket's rule today works the same way: it counts all the time abroad in the year, not each trip separately. A two-day meeting here and a four-day conference there look harmless one by one. Over a year, they can pass 42 days.
Who is most affected
| Work pattern | Why it adds up |
|---|---|
| Consultants and sales staff | Regular client visits abroad, often a few days at a time, many times a year. |
| Posted work | Weeks or months on a site or at a client in another country. |
| Airline, ship and train crew | Days away from Sweden are part of the job itself. |
| Managers in international groups | Board meetings, regional offices and trade fairs abroad. |
Rahul, a solutions engineer in Gothenburg, counted his trips for the first time when he started planning his application. Twelve short client visits came to 51 days in one year, so that whole year's time abroad would be deducted.
What "a year" means: an open question
Migrationsverket doesn't define "a year" for this rule. It could mean calendar years, or years counted from when your residence time started.
The two can give different answers. Forty days in the autumn and thirty days the following spring are fine in calendar years, but may fall inside one year counted from your start date. The safe reading is the stricter one. The Citizenship Countdown shows both readings and uses the stricter one for your date.
Long assignments abroad
A long posting is different from a string of trips. If you move abroad and settle there, your residence in Sweden ends. When you come back, you can count a new residence time from the day you return.
If your employer offers an assignment abroad of several months or more, ask before you accept how it affects your citizenship plans. It may be worth waiting until after you have applied.
Why the residence time matters more now
Since 6 June 2026 the general residence requirement is eight years, up from five, with no transitional arrangements. See the eight-year requirement.
A longer period means more years in which travel can add up. One deducted year now pushes back a date that is already further away, so it pays to check every year, not only the last one.
Practical steps for frequent travellers
Count as you go
Keep a running list of every trip: the day you left and the day you came back, both counted as days abroad. Our guide on how to count your days abroad shows how to rebuild an old list.
Set a yearly budget
Treat 42 days as a ceiling, not a target. Holidays and family visits come out of the same 42, so plan work travel with that in mind.
Talk to your employer
Tell your manager or HR when you are close to applying. Often a colleague can take a trip, or a meeting can move online for a year. Your employer's travel system is also the best record of your work trips.
Plan around your application date
Work out when your residence time looks complete, and protect the years before it. One heavy travel year near the end can push your date back by many months.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do business trips count as time abroad for Swedish citizenship?
Yes. Work trips count like any other time abroad. If all your time abroad in a year is more than six weeks, the whole time is deducted from your residence time.
What is MIG 2008:14?
It is a 2008 ruling by the Migration Court of Appeal on the residence requirement in the Citizenship Act. An applicant who worked abroad in regular periods of several weeks, close to half of each year, could not count that time as residence time. The court looked at the pattern of absences together, not each trip on its own.
Is "a year" a calendar year for the six-week rule?
Migrationsverket doesn't define it. It could be calendar years or years from when your residence time started. The safe reading is to check both and plan by the stricter one.
Does a long work assignment abroad stop my residence time?
It can. If you move abroad and settle there, your residence in Sweden ends, and your residence time starts again when you return. Check before accepting a long posting.
Can my employer write a letter saying my trips were for work?
A letter can explain your travel, but work trips still count as time abroad. What matters is the total number of days you were outside Sweden in each year.
