The rules in full: moving to Sweden with your family
What the maintenance requirement is
A worker bringing family to Sweden must show that a set amount is left each month after tax and rent. For 2026 it is 8 116 kr for a single adult and 13 408 kr for a couple, plus 4 337 kr to 6 941 kr per child depending on age.
Child benefit is taken off
Migrationsverket reduces the amount for each child by any child benefit and large-family supplement, so families with children often need less than the sum of the table.
The older amounts
A permit granted before 1 October 2026 keeps the older amounts for an extension registered by 1 October 2027: 6 243 kr for a single adult and 10 314 kr for a couple, plus 3 336 kr to 5 339 kr per child.

FAQ
The maintenance requirement, explained
How much income do I need to bring my family to Sweden?
Migrationsverket looks at what is left after tax and housing. From 1 October 2026 its page lists 8 116 kr a month for a single adult and 13 408 kr for a couple, plus an amount per child by age.
Do the new amounts apply to extensions?
For an extension, the new amounts apply when the permit was granted on or after 1 October 2026, or when the extension is registered after 1 October 2027. A permit granted before 1 October 2026 keeps the older amounts for an extension registered by 1 October 2027.
Does child benefit count?
The amount for each child is reduced by any child benefit and large-family supplement, so the real requirement for a family with children can be lower than the table's total.
Does this calculator store what I type?
