Most people who come to Sweden on a work permit don't think about citizenship in the first year. They are busy finding a flat, a bank and a doctor. But the road is long, and the choices you make early (how much you travel, what you earn, whether you learn Swedish) decide when you reach the end.
Here is the whole road for one fictional person, Tomás, with real dates.
The road in three stops
| Stop | When | What it takes |
|---|---|---|
| Work permit | 1 February 2022 | A job offer and a permit granted before arrival |
| Permanent residence | From February 2026 | 4 years on work permits within the last 7 years |
| Citizenship | Earliest 1 February 2030 | 8 years of residence, plus income, language, identity and an orderly life |
The dates for the last stop assume no year with more than six weeks abroad. We come back to that below.
Stop one: arriving on a work permit
Tomás got a job offer from a company in Gothenburg. His work permit was granted while he was still at home, and he landed in Sweden on 1 February 2022.
His permit was granted before he came, and the decision said it counted toward settlement, so his residence time for citizenship started the day he entered Sweden. Without such a permit on arrival, it would have started the day he applied for one. For the full rules on when the clock starts, see the eight-year rule.
Stop two: permanent residence after four years
A work-permit holder can get permanent residence after four years on work permits within the last seven years. For Tomás, four years ran out in February 2026.
You apply by asking for an extension of your work permit and ticking that you want permanent residence. You can apply at the earliest two months before your current permit expires. The key is timing. Tomás applied before his last work permit expired, so he could keep working for his employer while he waited for a decision. If you apply after your permit has expired, you don't have the right to work while you wait. Put the expiry date of your current permit in your calendar with a reminder months ahead.
Stop three: citizenship after eight years
Since 6 June 2026 the general requirement is eight years of residence. Tomás's residence time started on 1 February 2022, so his earliest date to apply is 1 February 2030.
That date only holds if no year has more than six weeks abroad. In 2027 Tomás spends 50 days abroad: a long trip home and several work trips. All 50 days are deducted, and his earliest date moves to 23 March 2030. The rule is all or nothing. Read the six-week rule for how it works.
Permanent residence does not restart the clock. Tomás's years on his settlement work permits count toward the eight.
What to keep track of each year
Days abroad
Write down every trip, work trips included. Stay at or below 42 days a year. A note on your phone works, or use the Citizenship Countdown, which shows your earliest date as you add trips.
Income
From 6 June 2026 you must support yourself to become a citizen. Between 18 and 67 that means your own income from lasting, unsubsidised work of at least three income base amounts a year: SEK 250,200 in 2026, about SEK 20,850 a month before tax. No more than six months of income support in the last three years. Your partner's income and your savings don't count. Keep your payslips and annual tax statements. More in the income requirement.
Swedish and Swedish society
Between 16 and 66 you need Swedish at B1 for reading and listening and A2 for speaking and writing, plus knowledge of Swedish society. You show it with passing grades (for example from school, komvux or the highest SFI course), or with the new citizenship tests run by UHR. Starting SFI in your first or second year is far easier than cramming in year seven. More in the language and society test.
Passport
You prove your identity with an original passport or ID card from your home country, with your photo, and you visit Migrationsverket in person. The document can still prove your identity after it has expired. Keep it safe: you don't send it with the application, and Migrationsverket contacts you if it needs to see it.
An orderly life
Pay your debts and bills on time. Significant debts or a criminal conviction can stop or delay citizenship, and after a conviction the waiting time is longer.
Tomás's year-by-year checklist
- 2022: register in the population register, get a personnummer, start SFI.
- 2023 to 2025: renew the work permit in time, keep payslips, log every trip.
- Early 2026: apply for permanent residence before the last permit expires.
- 2026 to 2029: keep travel under 42 days a year, finish Swedish, keep the original passport safe.
- February 2030: apply for citizenship (fee SEK 2,900, not refunded).
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to go from a work permit to Swedish citizenship?
For most people at least eight years from when their residence time started. Work-permit holders usually get permanent residence after four years on work permits, then apply for citizenship once they reach eight years of residence.
Do I need permanent residence before I apply for citizenship?
For someone who came on a work permit, yes: permanent residence is the first stop and citizenship the second. You can apply for permanent residence after four years on work permits within the last seven years.
Does getting permanent residence restart my citizenship clock?
No. Your residence time counts from when it started, for example the day you entered Sweden with a settlement permit granted before arrival. The years on settlement work permits count toward the eight years.
When should I apply for permanent residence?
Once you have four years on work permits, together with an extension of your work permit, at the earliest two months before your current permit expires and never after. If you apply in time you can keep working while you wait for a decision.
