The weeks after landing go faster when part of the paperwork is already done. Skatteverket lets you start the population registration (folkbokföring) before you move, and a few other things can be arranged from home too.
What you can do before you move
- Report the move. Skatteverket's "Moving to Sweden" e-service takes the notification 14 days before you move at the earliest. The decision letter later goes to the address you give, so report the move once you know your home.
- Gather the documents. Skatteverket asks for copies of every passport page with information on it, and documents for family members moving with you.
- Phone and e-ID. A prepaid SIM doesn't need a personnummer (see your first 30 days). Holders of an EU/EEA or UK passport can get an approved e-ID before they have a Swedish number.
What has to wait until you land
The identity check. You and every family member moving with you must visit a state service centre in person after you've arrived, as soon as possible. Some service centres only take booked visits, so book a time for your first days.
Tip: Go together. The identity check is for everyone in the family, so one visit for all of you saves trips.
Staying less than a year?
Then you aren't registered in the population register. You apply for a coordination number in Skatteverket's coordination number e-service instead, and book an identity check at a service centre; the number is issued after the check. A passport-issuing authority, such as a Swedish embassy, can sometimes do the identity check abroad.

Moving for work? How Settio helps
Settio helps employers and immigration and relocation agencies run the whole move in one place, so the person moving can focus on settling in:
- Before the move: one plan for the permit and the move, with every step and deadline. A partner and children get their own steps in the same household.
- After arrival: the employee portal shows the newcomer their next steps on their phone, in their language, from registering after arrival to help for settling in.
- When the permit runs out: permit monitoring flags the extension in good time.
