BankID makes life in Sweden easy: you log in to authorities, sign rental contracts and approve payments from your phone. That is exactly why fraudsters want it. A BankID signature binds you, so the rules below are worth learning in your first week. For how to get BankID, see ID card and BankID.

The police's rules for calls

  • Never identify yourself with BankID when someone calls you. Not for "the bank", not for "the police", not for a parcel.
  • Hang up if you're unsure. Don't trust the caller, however convincing they sound.
  • Never share codes from your bank card or card reader with anyone who asks.
Tip: Newcomers are a target. Scammers count on people who don't yet know how Swedish authorities and banks contact you. If a call creates urgency, end it.

If you've been tricked

  1. Contact your bank first, to try to stop further fraud.
  2. Report it to the police on 114 14. If the crime is happening now, call 112.

An e-ID before your personnummer

If you hold an EU/EEA or UK passport, there is an e-ID approved by Digg for people without a Swedish number, set up remotely with your passport. Once you have your Swedish ID card, switch your e-ID to it. The same rules apply: never log in for someone who calls you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the police or my bank ask me to log in with BankID on the phone?

No. The police's advice is never to identify yourself with BankID when someone calls you, and to end the call if you're unsure.

What do I do if I signed something with BankID for a scammer?

Contact your bank first to stop further fraud, then report it to the police on 114 14, or 112 if it is happening now.

Moving for work? How Settio helps

Settio helps employers and immigration and relocation agencies run the whole move in one place, so the person moving can focus on settling in:

  • Before the move: one plan for the permit and the move, with every step and deadline. A partner and children get their own steps in the same household.
  • After arrival: the employee portal shows the newcomer their next steps on their phone, in their language, from registering after arrival to help for settling in.
  • When the permit runs out: permit monitoring flags the extension in good time.

HR teams and agencies can start for free. Moving yourself? Try our free tools for life in Sweden.
