The first Swedish winter is when many international hires find out how long the dark part of the year is. A short check-in in December catches it before it becomes a resignation in spring.

What 1177 says

  • Spending time outdoors in daylight, ideally around midday, helps. 1177: depression
  • Adults who don't eat fish or fortified foods, or aren't in the sun in summer, are recommended a vitamin D supplement. 1177: nutrition
  • Anyone who thinks they're depressed should contact a health centre and not wait too long.

How to ask

  • Ask how settled they feel on a simple scale, and what's in the way.
  • Let them answer in categories (housing, language, feeling alone, the partner) as well as in their own words, and keep their words private.
  • Follow up a low answer within days.

The employee's side: your first Swedish winter.
