FAQ

Swedish citizenship, explained

How many years do I need to live in Sweden to become a citizen?

From 6 June 2026, 8 years in most cases. 7 years if you are married to or live with a Swedish citizen (and have lived together for 5 years), as a refugee or if you are under 21; 5 if you are stateless; 2 for Nordic citizens. Applications not decided by 6 June 2026 are judged on the new rules.

What is the six-week rule?

If you have been abroad more than six weeks (42 days) in total during a year, Migrationsverket deducts the whole time you were abroad that year from your residence time, not only the days over six weeks. Shorter holidays and visits don't count against you.

Do work trips count as time abroad?

Yes. All trips in the year add up, whatever the reason. The Migration Court of Appeal has held that many short trips together can lead to a deduction (MIG 2008:14).

Is "a year" a calendar year?

Migrationsverket doesn't say. The Citizenship Countdown counts your trips both in calendar years and in years from your start date, and shows the stricter result.

When does my time in Sweden start counting?

From the day you entered Sweden if your permit was granted before you came. If you applied from inside Sweden, from the day you handed in that application.

Does this tool store my trips?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and your answers are kept only on your device until you clear them. If you ask for a reminder, we keep your email address, the date and your language until the last reminder or until you stop it. If you choose to keep your road in a free Settio account, your answers are sent to it when you sign in. Trips from a file or typed in your own words are read by Settio's assistant after a free sign-in, once, and the file is never stored. Picking the dates yourself needs no account.

Is the result legal advice?

No. The Citizenship Countdown gives general information based on Migrationsverket's own pages and Swedish law. It isn't legal advice for anyone, and using it doesn't create a lawyer-client relationship. Migrationsverket decides every application, so check with Migrationsverket or a qualified adviser before you act.
