Sweden's stricter rules on family immigration took effect on 1 October 2026. They come from the government's bill Skärpta villkor för anhöriginvandring (prop. 2025/26:301), which the Riksdag approved. For employers and agencies the biggest change is simple to say and easy to miss: the family's finances are now checked again when the permit is extended.

The changes at a glance

WhoWhat changed on 1 October 2026
Family of work permit holdersThe maintenance requirement is checked at extension too, not only at the first application.
Family of EU Blue Card and ICT permit holdersComprehensive health insurance when the family member stays one year or less.
Family of researchersA maintenance requirement is introduced, also at extension.
Family of studentsComprehensive health insurance for a stay of one year or less; a custody rule for a child who isn't the couple's joint child. The maintenance requirement is unchanged.
Sponsors on a temporary permitA two-year wait before the family can get a permit. Workers, researchers and doctoral students are not covered.
Young adultsNew ways to extend a family-based permit after 18, and a temporary way to switch to a work or study permit from inside Sweden.

Maintenance is now checked at extension

Before 1 October 2026, Migrationsverket checked the maintenance requirement only the first time the family applied. It now applies when the family applies to extend as well. The person in Sweden must show that, after tax and rent, enough is left each month to support the whole family.

  • Income that doesn't count: a subsidised job and unemployment benefit. Migrationsverket's news for workers says family members' income can count, with limits on which income qualifies.
  • The amounts: Migrationsverket's page on the maintenance requirement for the person in Sweden lists, for 2026, SEK 8,116 a month for a single adult and SEK 13,408 for a couple, plus SEK 4,337 (age 0 to 6), 5,205 (7 to 10), 6,074 (11 to 14) or 6,941 (15 and over) per child, reduced by any child allowance.
  • Older permits get a year: if the family's permit was granted before 1 October 2026 and the extension is registered by 1 October 2027, the lower amounts apply (SEK 6,243 for a single adult, SEK 10,314 for a couple). From 2 October 2027 the higher amount applies to every application.
Two pages, two sets of numbers. On 15 October 2026, Migrationsverket's permit page for employees still listed SEK 6,243 and SEK 10,314 for 2026, while its page on the maintenance requirement listed the higher amounts from 1 October. Health insurance for short stays

A family member of an EU Blue Card or ICT permit holder who will stay in Sweden for one year or less now needs comprehensive health insurance. It must cover, among other things, healthcare and hospital care in Sweden. The same applies to the family of students staying one year or less.

Researchers' families

Families of researchers now face a maintenance requirement. It covers the research permit, the mobility permit for longer stays and the permit for former researchers to look for work or a business idea, and it applies at extension too.

Permanent residence

When the permit holder applies for permanent residence, each family member needs their own residence permit to keep living with them in Sweden. Plan both applications together.

The two-year wait doesn't cover workers

A person in Sweden on a temporary residence permit must, as a rule, have lived here on it for two years before the family can get a permit to join them. According to the government, people who moved to Sweden to work, researchers, doctoral students and some refugees are not covered by the waiting requirement.

Young adults, and hiring one

A young adult who got a residence permit as a child can now extend it based on the parent's ties if they are 18 to 20, or 21 or older, live with the parent and depend on them in a special way. For employers the useful part is temporary: an application for a work permit or a permit for higher education studies made between 1 October 2026 and 31 December 2027 can be made from inside Sweden by someone over 18 who had a child's permit based on a parent after 1 October 2023. The usual requirements still apply.

What HR teams and agencies should do now

  1. List every employee whose family's permits run out in the next twelve months.
  2. For each, check the income left after tax and rent against Migrationsverket's amounts, at least two months before the extension.
  3. For families whose permits were granted before 1 October 2026, extend by 1 October 2027 where it fits the permit dates, while the lower amounts apply.
  4. For EU Blue Card and ICT assignments of a year or less, add health insurance for the family to the move plan.
  5. When someone applies for permanent residence, file the family's own permits at the same time.

In Settio, a family member's plan in Sweden now has a step to show maintenance again before the extension, and a health insurance step for short Blue Card and ICT stays. For the whole move, see moving to Sweden with your family on a work permit.

Frequently Asked Questions

On 1 October 2026. Temporary parts, such as applying from inside Sweden for some young adults, end on 1 January 2028.

Yes, since 1 October 2026. Permits granted before that date keep the lower amounts for an extension registered by 1 October 2027.

Does the two-year wait apply to work permit holders?

No. According to the government, people who moved to Sweden to work, researchers and doctoral students are not covered.

Does my Blue Card family need health insurance?
