Moving to Sweden from Bangladesh: Work Permit, Biometrics and Arrival (2026)

Bangladeshi citizens apply for a Swedish work permit online. The Embassy of Sweden in Dhaka handles the in-person steps for Swedish permits, such as applications on paper and collecting the residence permit card. Because you need a visa for Sweden, you give biometrics at an embassy and get your card before you travel.

1. The permit conditions

• A monthly salary of at least SEK 34,470 (90% of the Swedish median, for applications from 16 June 2026), and in line with the collective agreement or what is normal in the occupation.
• A few occupations have a lower level of SEK 28,725, for example some IT support roles, assistant nurses, welders and butchers.
• Since 1 June 2026 two jobs can no longer get a work permit at all: personal assistants and forest berry pickers.
• If the employment lasts one year or less, you need health insurance.

2. Applying and giving biometrics in Dhaka

• The easiest way is the online application. Your employer starts it and you complete your part.
• If you can't use the e-service, you can apply in person at the embassy. You must first email the embassy to arrange an appointment, and pay the fee at BRAC Bank (North Gulshan branch). Bring the original receipt.
• Migrationsverket decides whether you need a passport check or an interview. Many applicants can do a digital passport check in an app, while others show the passport in person. Don't contact the embassy unless Migrationsverket asks you to.
• Because you need a visa for Sweden, you give fingerprints and a photo (biometrics) at an embassy before you travel.
• The embassy in Dhaka only handles Swedish permits. It does not process residence or work permits for any other country.

3. Collecting the residence permit card

If the permit is approved, the card can be sent to the embassy and you get an appointment to collect it. Migrationsverket says to allow up to four weeks for the card after biometrics. Don't book flights until you have the card, as you need it to travel.

4. Fake agents

The embassy has warned about people who claim to represent Migrationsverket or the embassy and offer earlier interviews or a better outcome for money. The embassy says all residence permit appointments are arranged by the embassy and are free of charge. Report anyone who asks for payment. Migrationsverket's application fee for a work permit is SEK 2,200. Be careful with job offers that require you to pay a recruiter. A real Swedish employer must offer terms that meet Swedish rules, and the offer is checked by Migrationsverket.

5. Family members

Your spouse and children can apply with you. Each person who needs a visa gives biometrics at an embassy. Keep good originals and translations of marriage and birth certificates, because Skatteverket may ask for them when you register. See moving to Sweden with your family.

6. Social security and tax

• No social security agreement: Bangladesh is not on Skatteverket's list of countries with a social security agreement with Sweden. When you work for a Swedish employer, you are covered by Swedish social insurance from the start.
• Tax treaty: Sweden and Bangladesh have a double taxation agreement, signed in 1982. Skatteverket counts a stay of six months in a row in Sweden as living here, and residents are taxed in Sweden on their salary.

7. After you arrive

1. Register at Skatteverket for your personnummer (how).
2. Get your ID card, bank account and BankID (how).
3. Driving: a Bangladeshi licence can't be exchanged. It can be used for up to one year after you are registered. To keep driving after that you need a Swedish driving licence. A licence that isn't in English, German or French and wasn't issued under the Geneva or Vienna road traffic conventions needs a certified translation.
