Can an employee on a work permit change jobs or roles in Sweden?
Updated · Facts checked against the official sources below
A first work permit is tied to one employer and one kind of work; after two years of permits in total it is tied to the kind of work only. A new employer or a new occupation needs a new permit. The person can start the new job once they have applied, if they applied before the current permit expires and the new employer advertised the job.
In detail
- A new employer or a new occupation needs a new permit; a new organisation number counts as a new employer.
- Apply before the current permit ends, and keep the terms at the permit level.
- Check the decision or the residence permit card for what the permit is tied to.
